Volunteer Opportunity - Director
Sumo Canada is looking for talented and motivated candidates to fulfill key roles in the Organization. The volunteer role description below is for the role of Director. Please read the description carefully and, should you be interested, send your resume before the deadline.
ROLE TITLE: DIRECTOR
NUMBER OF OPENINGS: 1-5
TIME COMMITMENT: 3 hours weekly, on average
TYPE OF POSITION: This is a volunteer position
TERM: Minimum 1 year commitment

ROLE DESCRIPTION
The successful candidate will join the Board of Directors of Sumo Canada. The Board of Directors is primarily responsible for ensuring the proper management of the organization’s assets and resources. Its focus is on setting the strategic direction and goals of the organization. While day-to-day management is delegated to the President, the Board remains the organization’s steward.
As a Director, you will have various responsibilities, including, but not limited to:
- Act in compliance with Sumo Canada’s internal policies and with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
- Prepare thoroughly, attend, and actively engage in discussions and voting at all Board meetings.
- Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate Sumo Canada’s strategic plan.
- Act reasonably, prudently, and in good faith, prioritizing the best interests of Sumo Canada, its Members, and stakeholders.
- Supervise the Organization’s financial and legal affairs.
- Supervise the Organization’s practices regarding hiring of staff and volunteers.
- Evaluate and address issues related to conduct and ethics, ensuring alignment with organizational values and ethical standards
- Take the initiative to actively support Sumo Canada’s fundraising efforts.
- Contribute to the review and improvement of Sumo Canada’s internal policies and procedures.
The Director’s performance will be reviewed annually. Following each performance review, the Director may receive a commendation or reference letter, recognizing their contributions and supporting them in future volunteer or employment opportunities.
REQUIREMENTS
Ideal candidates will have a passion for sports development, strong leadership skills, and a deep commitment to advancing sumo wrestling in Canada.
Other requirements include:
- Thorough understanding of the role of the Board of directors in a not-for-profit organization
- Proven organizational and leadership skills
- Proficiency in productivity software and tools such as Google Docs and Google Drive
- Proficiency with collaboration tools such as Discord
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English
- Knowledge of French, a plus
- Experience in not-for-profits or charities, a plus
- Experience as a board director or executive, a plus
- Experience in organized sports, a plus
- Experience in fundraising campaigns, a plus
